The Fideicomiso
Many people believe that foreigners cannot own property in Mexico. This is a misconception that has been around for some time. According to Mexican Law, foreigners cannot have direct ownership of residential property within 100 kilometers from the border and 50 kilometers from the coast. This area is known as the "restricted zone." For properties located in the restricted zone, banks can act as trustees for foreigners purchasing the property. This trust between the bank and the foreigner is known as the Fedeicomiso. This type of arrangement is very common in the United States. In other words, the trust has legal ownership of the property and you own the trust.
